Mar 29th, 2012

Overcome the fear of public speaking and defeat your public speaking phobia, and you will be able to function more effectively in just about any environment.

You may not believe it, but overcoming fear of public speaking is relatively easy.

You know, it’s the strangest thing, but even a person who seems to be relatively confident can have a very deep seated fear of speaking before a group of people, or speaking in public in any way.

Overcome The Fear of Public Speaking

Are you one of these people?

If the mere thought of speaking in public puts you to a cold sweat, and makes you worry about what people are going to think of you, or how they are going to react, then yes, you certainly have a fear of public speaking.

But there is no need to worry about it, because you’re not alone. As a matter of fact, a great section of the population has a deep seated fear of speaking in public, and this doesn’t necessarily mean a fear of speaking at large meetings, but sometimes a fear of getting up and speaking at a family gathering or even among a colleague or tow at the office. So how do you overcome your fear of public speaking?

How to overcome the fear of public speaking…

  • Well, the key to overcoming public speaking anxiety and deal with public speaking nerves is actually to get started with public speaking.
  • You know, if you think of speaking in public and about all the problems that could arise, the chances are that you will never ever speak in public, because you’ll be so overwhelmed with the potential problems. In reality, there is actually very little problem to speaking in public, and the sooner you can understand this for yourself the better.
  • The whole key to speaking in public is to begin with a small group of trusted people. Don’t speak in front of a group of strangers, but rather collect a few friends who you are very comfortable with, and then give these friends a speech.
  • Start out with people who you know will start favorably and you will be that much more likely gaining confidence in speaking to a larger group of people or even to strangers. Simple public speaking activities are one of the key ways to overcome the fear of public speaking.

Know your subject…

Now, the second most important thing when speaking to people is to know what you are talking about.

If you read up thoroughly or if you now a great deal upon the subject you are speaking on, it will be very easy for you to get into feel of what you’re saying.

Rehearse!

Rehearsing your speech is also very crucial. If you practice your speech something like thirty times or so you will almost automatically get over fear of public speaking.

And if you follow these simple steps, the chances are much more that you will overcome the fear of public speaking and deliver your speech without the slightest issues.

  2. Great tips Edyta. I was one of those people who avoided public speaking at all costs – then a friend talked me into chairing a small committee in our women’s group. What she didn’t tell me was that one of my duties would be to speak at our state convention in front of 500 people! When I didn’t die, I decided to figure out how to do it better so I joined a local chaper of Toastmasters. Ironically, my job evolved into my having to do a LOT of public speaking over the next couple of decades. We just never know how the events of our life will conspire to change us, huh?

    Edyta,

I think your post is spot on. The BEST advice is to know your subject, be the expert, be ready to answer questions. And, rehearse. This too is key. If you’ve said something already it’s going to seem natural to repeat it.

    Excellent!

OMG! Even the thought of speaking in front of a public gives me cold sweat.I don’t seem to be able to overcome this anxiety myself, although I had tried very hard the last couple of years. One trick I do is to imagine that I am talking to a bunch of sheep in the room :) . I know, it is bad…

    Hi Edyta,
I always had that kind of problem when I had to speak in public even if the audience is small. The problem is that even if I know perfectly the subject I am still feeling that I am going to lose my words and go blank. Anyway I believe that like anything else practice and experience help a lot to face that kinds of problems…

  6. Hi Edyta,
    This blog is so timely!
Next week I’ll be speaking in public and I realize that although I know what I’m talking about when rehearsing I eel my energy low and my words are not as clear as I would like them to sound.
Thanks to my stress relieving emotional tools I hope to be myself and natural.
    Thanks for this great post!

This is a great post, Edyta, thank you for sharing it. Its one thing to sit around our living room and chat with our friends and family, and its quite another to step up to the front of a room and have every person in the room staring at you while you try to talk. Very stressful stuff.

Practice and knowledge go a long way toward getting rid of those jitters that fillup the tummy when its time to talk. Good advice, thank you for sharing it. :-)

  8. You know what’s my greatest challenge when speaking in front of a group, or even cohosting our weekly mental cleanse calls? To exhale!!! I don’t let out as much air as I take in, so with each breath, my lungs get fuller and fuller, until I am in danger of hyperventilating! I have to make myself think of letting out a long breath, and then I’m okay.

Thanks Edyta for the tips! Public Speaking is a talent for some and for others it is something that they would like to avoid. I believe though, that if we make a conscious effort to improve we can in no time be a great public speaker. Thanks again.
